“I’ve Been Diagnosed With Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and There’s Nothing Wrong With Being a Narcissist” — Nick Cannon

American television host and actor Nick Cannon has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), but insists that he does not necessarily consider the condition a bad thing.

Cannon made the revelation while discussing his diagnosis, explaining that the assessment involved extensive psychological testing over approximately three months before a conclusion was reached.

“I’ve been diagnosed with NPD. That’s narcissistic personality disorder. And they make you take hours and hours of tests. It’s over a period of time of like three months before they can determine if you have narcissistic personality disorder,” he said.

However, rather than viewing the diagnosis negatively, Cannon argued that people with narcissistic traits can make significant contributions to society through their confidence, ambition and belief in themselves.

He referenced several globally recognised personalities, including Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Beyoncé, the late Michael Jackson and basketball legend Michael Jordan, whom he believes demonstrate narcissistic traits.

“You wouldn’t have your iPhone if it wasn’t for a man named Steve Jobs. I believe Beyoncé is a narcissist. You understand? She’s the most amazing performer we’ve ever seen. Michael Jackson is a narcissist. Michael Jordan is a narcissist,” he stated.

Cannon further argued that the strong belief these individuals had in themselves contributed to their remarkable achievements.

He concluded that there was nothing inherently wrong with being a narcissist.

However, it is important to distinguish between confidence, ambition and healthy self-belief and Narcissistic Personality Disorder, which is a recognised mental health condition that can involve persistent patterns of grandiosity, a need for admiration and difficulties with empathy and relationships. Being successful or confident does not automatically mean someone has NPD.

What do you think about Nick Cannon’s position? Is narcissism sometimes mistaken for confidence and self-belief, or is he overlooking the harmful side of the disorder?
