The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has stirred fresh conversations over traditional hierarchy in Yorubaland after declaring himself the supreme and number one king among Yoruba traditional rulers.
The monarch made the declaration during an appearance on the State Affairs Podcast, where he was asked about his position and status among traditional rulers in the Yoruba kingdom.
Responding confidently, Oba Owoade said:
“I am the supreme king in Yorubaland and the number one king in Yorubaland.”
He further explained that his position was based on historical records, insisting that the Alaafin institution occupies the foremost position in Yoruba traditional history.
“Historically, Alaafin is number one,” he stated.
When asked again whether he genuinely considered himself the number one king in Yorubaland, the monarch stood by his position.
“Historically, just as I have said to you, I am very confident about that. I am the number one,” he declared.
His comments are likely to reignite discussions about the historical status, influence and traditional hierarchy of prominent Yoruba monarchs, particularly the Alaafin of Oyo, Ooni of Ife and other highly revered traditional rulers.
The debate over traditional supremacy in Yorubaland has historical, cultural and institutional dimensions, with different royal institutions maintaining their own interpretations of history and precedence.
What is your take? Is the Alaafin historically the number one king in Yorubaland, or should the different Yoruba traditional institutions be regarded as independent centres of authority without ranking one above another?
