NBC revokes Silverbird, AIT, Raypower, Rhythm FM, others’ licences

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) revoked the broadcast licenses of Silverbird TV, AIT, Raypower FM, and Rhythm FM, among others, on Friday, Charmingpro reports.

The NBC’s Director-General, Mallam Balarabe Shehu, made the announcement in a statement on Friday, citing the media houses’ failure to renew their broadcast licenses.

He also directed its state offices to coordinate with security agencies to ensure that the stations’ operations cease within the next 24 hours.

The broadcast regulator, according to the statement, published a list of stations that had yet to renew their licenses three months ago.

Despite the publication, the commission stated that “some licensees have yet to pay their outstanding debts, in contravention of the National Broadcasting Commission Act CAP N11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, particularly section 10(a) of the Act’s third schedule.”

“As a result, after careful consideration, NBC hereby announces the revocation of the licenses of the…stations and gives them 24 hours to cease operations.”

“Our offices across the country are hereby directed to work with security agencies to ensure immediate compliance.”
