Nigerian relationship therapist Blessing CEO has opened up about the painful loss of her nine-year-old son, Brian, who reportedly died from asthma-related complications while she was in prison.
Recounting the heartbreaking experience, Blessing explained that her son had battled chronic asthma from childhood, resulting in frequent hospital visits over several years.
According to her, Brian’s condition could be triggered by several factors, including cold weather, dust, perfume and sweating. Despite the family’s efforts to manage his health, the little boy continued to struggle with the condition.
One of the most painful memories she shared was a conversation with Brian after he complained about chest pain while playing.
She recalled asking him why he had come upstairs, only for him to explain that he wanted to get some water. After drinking, he reportedly asked her a question that has remained etched in her memory: when would he be able to play without his chest hurting?
Blessing also disclosed that Brian had reportedly told his elder brother, aunt and grandfather on separate occasions that he had dreamt of his own death, although he never shared those experiences with her.
Reflecting on how the loss affected her, she said she did not leave prison feeling excited because she had lost someone she could never give up. However, she said she was determined to live in a way that would make her son proud.
She also described Brian as a sweet, energetic and selfless child who loved sharing with others.
Her account has brought attention to the emotional pain of losing a child and the challenges families face when caring for children living with chronic illnesses.
What makes a story like this especially heartbreaking is that children often struggle to explain the depth of their pain. As parents, caregivers and communities, we must take their complaints seriously and ensure they receive appropriate medical attention.
May every parent going through the pain of losing a child find the strength to keep going.
