Nigeria’s 2027 general elections could face an unexpected challenge if the Ebola outbreak spreads significantly, according to the Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Jide Idris.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Idris said that although there is currently no need to consider postponing the elections, the possibility could arise if the outbreak becomes sufficiently widespread.
He explained that Nigeria had been monitoring the Ebola situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but the movement of people, international flights and activities at the country’s entry points could increase the risk of the virus reaching Nigeria.
Idris also stressed that public health concerns should not be used as political weapons, expressing hope that the outbreak would not disrupt the electoral timetable.
With political activities already gathering momentum ahead of 2027, the statement has raised questions about how Nigeria would balance public health protection with its democratic process if the situation worsened.
What do you think? Should the 2027 elections be postponed if Ebola spreads widely, or should the government explore other measures to protect voters while keeping the elections on schedule?
