The Federal Government has shut down Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State for emergency runway repairs. The closure began on April 18, 2025, and is set to last until May 6, 2025. The decision aims to address safety concerns caused by a damaged runway section.
Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), announced the closure.
A sudden rupture in the runway’s asphalt surface prompted the action.
FAAN is following Nigerian civil aviation regulations to ensure passenger safety.
Repairs will focus on fixing the critical section during the two-week period.
Air Peace, a major Nigerian airline, suspended all flights to Enugu before the closure. The airline cited the runway’s poor condition as a safety risk. It noted that the deteriorating infrastructure disrupted operations. Air Peace has rerouted its Enugu flights to Asaba, Delta State, until repairs are complete. Posts on X showed public awareness, with one user stating, “FAAN shuts Enugu airport for runway repairs, reopens May 6.”
The airport serves Anambra, Benue, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Abia states. It is the South-East’s only international airport. The closure will disrupt travel, especially with road travel discouraged due to insecurity. Enugu’s runway has faced issues before, with soft soil causing wear from aircraft landings. Experts suggest heavy concrete groundwork could prevent frequent repairs.
In 2024, FAAN reported that Nigeria’s airport runways have outlived their lifespan. The Enugu runway has been a concern for years. Past closures in 2019 and 2020 addressed similar issues, yet problems persist. Stakeholders urge alternative repair methods to avoid full closures, as seen in other countries.
The closure affects Nigeria’s vibrant South-East, where fashion and culture thrive. Enugu’s markets and festivals draw travelers who now face delays. Local designers showcasing Ankara and adire at events may see reduced footfall. The region’s music scene, with stars like Flavour, also relies on air travel for gigs.
FAAN’s managing director, Olubunmi Kuku, has pushed for runway upgrades nationwide. The 2025 budget includes funds for 17 runway rehabilitations. Enugu’s repair is a step toward safer skies. Still, travelers hope for a swift reopening to resume normal activities.
Airlines like Ibom Air have also adjusted schedules. Flights to and from Enugu are suspended until April 27, 2025, pending further updates. The government is under pressure to complete repairs on time. Nigerians await a modernized airport that matches the region’s dynamic spirit.
