Popular Juju and Highlife musician Iyun “Saint Janet” Ayilore has passed away after a brief illness, bringing an end to a music career that made her one of the most unconventional voices in Nigeria’s Juju music scene.
Saint Janet reportedly died on Saturday, August 1, according to her manager, Jide Bass, who confirmed the development to journalists.
Known for her bold and unconventional musical style, Saint Janet built a unique identity by blending Juju and Highlife rhythms with street slang, humorous storytelling, and provocative lyrics. Her distinctive approach earned her widespread recognition and a loyal fan base across southwestern Nigeria.
The late singer was popularly known as the General Overseer of the Sinners’ Chapel and St Bottle’s Cathedral, nicknames that reflected her playful public persona and unconventional artistic brand. She also drew attention for creating daring adaptations of Christian gospel songs, a style that often generated both admiration and criticism.
Despite her controversial image, Saint Janet’s journey in music began in the church. She started singing in her local church choir at the age of four before pursuing her passion professionally.
She later obtained a Diploma in Mass Communication from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY). At the age of 18, she joined the Los Kenge Highlife/Juju Band in Abeokuta as a backup vocalist, laying the foundation for a career that would eventually see her establish herself as a solo artiste.
Beyond her music career, Saint Janet was a wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Kayode Iyun, and their son, Orinayo Michael.
News of her passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans, colleagues, and lovers of Juju music, many of whom have remembered her for her originality, fearless creativity, and unique contribution to the evolution of the genre.
