Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially emerged as the presidential flag bearer of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election. The National Primary Electoral Committee declared Atiku the winner late Wednesday night, May 27, 2026, in Abuja following a rigorous, two-day nationwide vote collation process. This milestone solidifies Atiku’s position as the arrowhead of the reorganized opposition bloc, marking his seventh attempt at the presidency and his fourth time flying a major party’s flag.
The Chief Returning Officer for the primary, Senator Tunde Ogbeha, announced the final figures following a direct primary exercise conducted across the country’s 8,809 wards using the Option A4 system. According to the certified results, Atiku secured a landslide victory with 1,846,370 votes, completely outpolling his closest rivals. His main challengers, former Minister of Transportation Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, secured 504,117 votes, while prominent economist and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen finished third with 177,120 votes. Out of over 2.5 million registered ADC members who participated in the exercise, Atiku’s commanding lead was largely anchored on a massive sweep of the northern voting blocs.
Despite the decisive numbers, the outcome has immediately plunged the newly formed opposition coalition into a severe internal crisis. Both Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen have outrightly rejected the collation process and the final declaration, alleging widespread voter disenfranchisement, irregularities, and systemic manipulation of the delegate and ward tracking processes. In his acceptance speech, however, Atiku downplayed the internal friction, praising the ADC for keeping democracy alive against external pressures and calling on his aggrieved rivals to unite with him to rescue the country in 2027.
