The Lagos State Government says an estimated 160,000 residents are currently living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), based on data gathered between January and September 2025.
The figure was announced on Thursday during the 2025 World AIDS Day press briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja. Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, said 147,466 of the affected residents are already on antiretroviral treatment.
Animashaun praised the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting that his support has continued to strengthen the state’s health systems and community structures. “It ensures that every effort to prevent, detect, and treat HIV is empowered and sustained,” she said.
She added that this year’s theme, “Overcoming Disruptions: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response,” reflects the challenges encountered, including setbacks caused by the Stop Work Order issued by the United States Government, which affected community-level interventions across the state.
