The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the attack on Fuji musician Abass Akande Obesere during a burial ceremony in Okitipupa.
Obesere had earlier called on the state government to take decisive action after he and members of his band were assaulted by thugs who also vandalized their equipment and stole money earned at the event.
Trouble reportedly started when the attackers stormed the venue and confronted the musician’s team in an attempt to extort him. A fight broke out, leading to injuries among his crew and damage to musical instruments. His earnings for the performance were also allegedly carted away.
Police spokesperson Olayinka Ayanlade confirmed the incident, saying two suspects had been arrested and exhibits recovered from them. He added that investigation was ongoing.
Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government, Andrew Ogunsakin, condemned the assault, describing it as “unacceptable” and not reflective of the community. He said he would personally contact Obesere to apologize and assured that measures would be put in place to avoid similar incidents.
Obesere’s media manager, Ayonla Authentic, gave further details, stating that the musician’s team was surrounded shortly after the performance. He said he was carrying the event’s proceeds, which made him a target.
He explained that the attackers demanded the money bag and beat him when he refused to hand it over. He suffered multiple blows, a dislocated shoulder, and injuries from a knife slash. The attackers fled with the money, while another group continued to rough-handle Obesere despite his attempts to calm the situation.
The team eventually escaped to seek safety and medical treatment.
The statement called the attack “criminal and unacceptable,” urging authorities to ensure all perpetrators are traced, arrested, and prevented from posing threats at future public events.
