On April 16, 2025, a joint security operation by the Oba Divisional Police Headquarters and Anambra Vigilante operatives led to the arrest of six individuals in Isu Village, Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The suspects—Doris Basil (28), Peter Ezedike (38), Susan Monday (27), Ogechi Okoro (27), Solomon Sunday (29), and Kenneth Achi (29)—were apprehended for allegedly hiring sick persons to solicit alms from the public.
During the raid, authorities rescued four sick individuals suffering from serious health conditions, including brain tumors and breast cancer. The victims received immediate first aid, and arrangements are underway for their further medical treatment and safe return to their families. Additionally, the police recovered six mobile phones and ₦82,400 in small denominations from the suspects.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the exploitation, citing Section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code, which addresses obtaining property by false pretence—a felony punishable by up to three years imprisonment. He also ordered the interrogation of the sick individuals’ relatives to determine any involvement. The suspects are expected to face charges upon the conclusion of the investigation.
