Veteran Fuji musician, Sulaimon Alao Adekunle, popularly known as KS1 Malaika, has responded to recent comments by singer Small Doctor, who expressed concerns over the state of Fuji music.
Small Doctor had taken to social media to voice his opinion, stating that Fuji music is “dying” and in need of urgent revival. He pointed out that since the rise of Remi Aluko in the early 2000s, he hasn’t seen another Fuji artist achieve significant prominence.
In a detailed response, KS1 Malaika disagreed with Small Doctor’s assessment. He emphasized that Fuji music is not dying but evolving, with numerous artists making strides both locally and internationally.
“My dear music son @iam_smalldoctor, I read your submission and understanding of Fuji Music, where you said after the emergence of Remi Aluko, there’s no other known Fuji musician, and that Fuji is dying,” Malaika wrote. “Although everyone is entitled to the right to freedom of speech and expression, let me educate you some more respectfully, because it’s the genre of music I belong to and should know better than you.”
He further highlighted that several Fuji musicians have emerged after Remi Aluko and are doing exceptionally well both at home and abroad. Malaika also pointed out that many hip-hop artists incorporate Fuji rhythms into their music, showcasing the genre’s influence and relevance.
“If Fuji receives the kind of attention and support TV/Radio stations accord HipHop, Fuji Music would go further and bigger,” he noted. “Despite the challenges, it remains highly formidable and a threat to other genres of music.
