Eko DisCo Announces 25-Day Daily Blackout in Lagos Amid TCN Maintenance

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has confirmed a 25‑day planned power outage across its network in Lagos, starting Monday, July 28, 2025, and running through Thursday, August 21, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

The blackout is necessary to facilitate essential maintenance on the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s Omotosho–Ikeja West 330 kV transmission line, a critical conduit for electricity into Lagos and surrounding areas.

Residents in affected parts of Lagos and EKEDC-served districts—such as Victoria Island, Lekki, Festac, Apapa, and Surulere—are advised to expect intermittent power supply and load shedding during the scheduled hours.

While EKEDC did not specify exact neighborhoods, past disruptions of similar nature have impacted major zones within its coverage area.

EKEDC has issued an apology for the inconvenience and urged customers to prepare adequately by planning power use, rationing during peak hours, and considering alternative sources such as generators or inverters. The company has also encouraged regular consultation of official communication channels for updates or changes to the timetable.

The maintenance is part of broader infrastructure reinforcement across Nigeria’s electricity sector, aimed at enhancing transmission capacity and minimizing recurrent grid failures. The announcement comes amid recent system instability, including a grid collapse that reduced national power supply to as low as 40 MW—a stark contrast to typical daily generation near 3,000 MW.

This prolonged outage underscores the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s power distribution framework, particularly in its ability to maintain consistent supply amid aging infrastructure and emergency repairs.
