The Nigerian Department of State Security, DSS, has denied arresting suspended Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN boss, Godwin Emefiele.
Willie Bassey, a Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, announced the CBN Governor’s suspension on Friday night, June 9, saying it is part of a planned reform of the financial sector.
Mr Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi has already been appointed as the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Daily Trust reported that credible sources around the presidency and the intelligence community said Emefiele was suspended because of many reasons. Among them is his recent role in naira swap and cashless policy that mopped up the entire money in circulation in the country, which nearly “truncated the conduct of the 2023 general elections.”
It was also alleged that the DSS, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and many financial regulatory agencies, both at home and abroad, have issues to grind with the embattled Emefiele.
A source who confirmed that the suspended CBN Governor is in DSS custody, told the publication “Yes, he is here already undergoing interrogation
Taking to their social media page, the DSS denied having Emefiele in their custody.
“Currently, Emefiele is not with the DSS” they wrote.
Reacting to the new report, one social media user wrote, “Emefiele didn’t learn from the mistakes of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who’s mouth ran him into trouble. Emefiele’s greedy life is putting him into trouble here. Now, the cabals are not here to safe him. Power is transient in the hands of mortal men, absolute power belong to God.”
Another user wrote, “All these theatrics is unnecessary. Those who know know that Emefiele has been honorably eased out of circulation at least in the meantime. They cant do nothing to more than that to him. Darkness cannot wrestle darkness.”
Another wrote, “Never expect anything less … if they agreed that he is with them , Nigerians will see it as pre planned … good job DSS but am very sure he is in there custody… I’m few days to come we will all understand .. God bless Nigeria 🇳🇬”
One Olaideishat wrote, “Tinubu wants to correct the mistakes of Buhari’s administration & prove his critics wrong, but even if he manages to move mountains, it won’t undo the suffering the APC has caused or bring back the countless lives lost; Nigerians still remember what happened during the election.”
