In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the community in Kano State, an eight-year-old girl named Siyama Idris lost her life after accidentally falling onto an exposed iron rod at an active road and drainage construction site in Tudun Wada quarters, Nassarawa Local Government Area.
The tragedy unfolded on Saturday, March 14, 2026, near Tudun Wada Primary School, where ongoing reconstruction and expansion of the road—including the building of drainage channels—had left hazardous materials uncovered. Eyewitness Abdulrashid Yusuf recounted that Siyama was on a simple errand, sent by her family to a nearby provision shop to purchase items for iftar, the evening meal to break the Ramadan fast.
Residents in the area have been relying on a makeshift “gadar katako”—a single wooden plank placed across the open drainage—as a temporary crossing due to the lack of proper pedestrian pathways or safety barriers around the site. While attempting to navigate this precarious bridge, the young girl slipped and fell directly onto one of the protruding iron rods reinforcing the drainage structure.
The severe injury proved fatal, cutting short a young life in an avoidable accident that has raised serious concerns about safety standards at public construction zones, especially in residential neighborhoods during a period when children are often out running errands for their families amid Ramadan observances.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stricter safety protocols, including proper fencing, warning signs, covered hazards, and designated safe crossings at all active construction sites. Community leaders and local authorities are now called upon to investigate and implement immediate measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
Our thoughts are with Siyama’s family and the entire Tudun Wada community during this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace.
