Segun Awolowo, Grandson of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dies at 61

Segun Awolowo, the grandson of the late nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has died at the age of 61.

A respected lawyer and public servant, he once served as the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), where he championed key reforms and pushed aggressively for the growth of Nigeria’s non-oil export sector.

Awolowo, born on September 27, 1963, never met his father. His father, Segun Awolowo Sr., died in a tragic car crash along the old Ibadan–Lagos road at just 25 years old, two months before his son was born.

In July 2021, Segun Awolowo was unanimously elected President of the National Trade Promotion Organizations (TPOs) for ECOWAS, highlighting his continental influence and his role in shaping West Africa’s trade agenda.

Further details surrounding his death are expected in the coming hours.
