The Lagos State Government has arrested no fewer than 281 suspected street urchins and criminal elements, popularly known as Omotaku, during a coordinated enforcement operation across major roads in the state.
The arrests were carried out by operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce during a week-long raid targeting areas notorious for extortion, harassment of motorists and other criminal activities.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Friday, January 17, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
According to Wahab, the operation covered several locations on both the Island and Mainland, including Lekki Phase 1, Ikoyi, Lekki–Ajah Expressway, Bourdillon, Animashahun Bus Stop, Akowonjo Road, Egbeda, Fadeyi Bus Stop, Costain, Funsho Williams Avenue, Victoria Island, Apongbon, Jibowu, Yaba, Lagos Island, Palmgrove, Ojuelegba Road, Surulere, and other adjoining areas where the presence of street urchins had become rampant.
He said the suspects were arrested for allegedly terrorising residents and motorists, forcefully extorting money and disrupting public order.
Wahab confirmed that all 281 suspects have been arraigned in court, reiterating the state government’s zero tolerance for street violence, extortion and lawlessness.
He also urged residents, especially motorists, to promptly report the activities of Omotaku and other nuisance elements to the Lagos State Taskforce for swift intervention.
“Lagosians, particularly motorists, should promptly reach out to the Lagos State Taskforce whenever Omotaku or other street urchins constitute a nuisance within their vicinity. Call 09137555111 or 09138555111 for swift response,” Wahab stated.
The operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to restore order, ensure public safety and maintain a clean and secure environment across the metropolis.
