Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has vowed to take a hands-on approach to tackling insecurity, declaring that he would personally join rescue efforts if Nigerians were abducted under his administration.
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Enugu State on Thursday, Obi said Nigeria needed a president who would take direct responsibility for the country’s security challenges rather than remain distant from the realities facing ordinary citizens.
“If there is a general bush, I will be in that bush with them,” he declared.
“As President of Nigeria, I will unite Nigeria. As President of Nigeria, I will secure Nigeria. We will deal with insecurity. I will not be president and somebody will kidnap our children; we will enter the bush together.”
Obi, who has been visiting different states ahead of the 2027 general elections, also highlighted the challenges of hunger, unemployment and insecurity, arguing that Nigerians deserved better leadership and improved living conditions.
“Today, our country is suffering. Today, people are hungry. Our children do not have employment. Today, Nigeria is not secured,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for his administration’s performance, including how borrowed funds had been utilised since taking office.
According to Obi, the presidency requires energy, accountability and a willingness to engage directly with Nigerians across the country.
“Our President must come and account for three years he’s been in office. He cannot stay in Abuja, and want us to vote for him. No! This job requires energy, requires travel,” he said.
He further promised to make the fight against corruption a priority, insisting that public funds must serve the public interest.
“Public money must be used for public good,” Obi stated.
Addressing questions about his ethnic background, he urged Nigerians to assess him based on his qualifications rather than where he comes from.
“Don’t vote for me because I’m an Igbo man. Please, I’m asking for your vote because I’m the most qualified to be President of Nigeria,” he said.
His remarks have added to the growing political conversations surrounding security, leadership and accountability ahead of the 2027 elections.
But what do you think? Should a president personally join rescue operations, or should the focus be on building a security system capable of preventing kidnappings and rescuing victims effectively?
