Usain Bolt and father

Local media outlets are reporting that Olympic legend, Usain Bolt’s father, Wellesley, has died, aged 68.

According to the reports, Wellesley died after a long battle with an undisclosed illness.

Wellesley has often been credited for the stunning success that his son, Usain, found in his career – having won eight Olympic gold medals before retiring.

Bolt is said to have maintained a close relationship with his father, who was often seen celebrating with the Jamaican track star after his races.

Wellesley worked in the coffee industry for 16 years before managing a local grocery store with wife Jennifer, providing for their family in a community with limited resources like running water and paved roads.

He leaves behind his children Usain, Sadiki and Christine Bolt-Hylton.

Despite Usain’s global fame, Wellesley remained rooted in Sherwood Content, resisting the urge to leave even as Usain’s success brought improvements like better infrastructure to their village.

Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, has paid tribute to him, writing:

”I join with every Jamaican in extending my deepest and most sincere condolences to @usainbolt, his beloved mother Mrs. Jennifer Bolt, and the entire Bolt family, following the passing of their patriarch, Mr. Wellesley Bolt.

‘Mr. Bolt was the father of a global icon, and a strong, quiet force behind one of Jamaica’s greatest sons. His presence, support, and guidance helped to shape a legacy that continues to inspire the world.

‘Usain, we have all witnessed the deep love and respect you’ve always shown for your family. You celebrated them with pride, and in doing so, you reminded us of the importance of family in our own lives.

‘As you grieve this great loss, the prayers and support of an entire nation are with you. We mourn with you, we stand with you, and we honour the memory of your father alongside you’.
