A non-governmental organization, NGO, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, MMWG, has called on all Nigerians to support the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying the present economic situation would soon be a thing of the past.
This is even as it advocated political reform that would make the country transform from a Presidential system of democracy to a Parliamentary one for good governance and social, economic and political development, pointing out that the current system favours the political officeholders instead of the masses.
According to the group, “the current economic hardship worsened by petrol subsidy withdrawal was precipitated by bad leadership of the past, insincerity and corruption.”
MMWG, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Abdullahi Ibrahim to mark the end of this year’s holy month of Ramadan, affirmed that “with measures being put in place, there is hope that prices of fuel will soon come down which would eventually force down the escalating prices of goods and services.”
“The strength being gained by the Naira against dollars is as a result of economic measures being put in place by the Federal Government to improve the nation’s economy, which calls for the support of all and sundry,” the group stated.
It, however, described electricity as the bedrock of all economic development; and called on the federal and state governments to take practical and urgent steps to stabilise power in the country for socio-economic development.
The group maintained that “no matter the economic measures and policies fashioned under the current dispensation, it cannot reflect positively in the lives of the people as there are loopholes that give room for too much corruption.
It called on patriotic Nigerians, civil society organizations, religious leaders and well-meaning individuals, to convince the present administration to initiate pragmatic steps that would lead the country to a new political order by changing from a Presidential to a Parliamentary system of government.
MMWG lamented that the Presidential system has been destroyed by corruptive tendencies, injustice and a lack of effective laws to fight economic, social and political crimes.
The group particularly blamed the deteriorating economic conditions of the country on the system of governance, calling for a total review of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended to accommodate the new Parliamentary system to be adopted.
The group finally appealed to the political class to rule with fear of God and be ready to change the political system for the betterment of all Nigerians instead of pursuing personal interests to the detriment of the ordinary people
