Rhema International College, Arch Bishop Akinola, Other Schools Shine as Afikpo Hosts 2025 NGGA Spelling Bee

Schools in Afikpo demonstrated exceptional academic strength as the Nigerian Girls’ Guide Association (NGGA), Afikpo Division, hosted its 2025 Spelling Bee Competition on October 18 at Amuro Town Hall, Afikpo, Ebonyi State.

The second edition of the event attracted more than 400 pupils competing across two categories: Junior (ages 6–8) and Senior (ages 9–13).

In the junior category, Maya Nwauzor, 7, of Arch Bishop Akinola International School emerged champion, while Otu-Ali Godwin, 8, of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Staff Primary School, and Azubuike Everjoy Uchechi, 6, of Kingdom Heritage Nursery and Primary School, secured the second and third positions respectively.

The senior category spotlighted Oko Shulamite Ogeri, a 9-year-old Primary 5 learner of Rhema International School, who took first place. Inya Desire Nneoma, a JSS 3 student of Rhema International College, finished second, followed by Uche Possible Michael, 11, of Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic Staff School in third place.

The Chairperson of the Planning Committee, Mrs. Chiamaka Nvene, expressed pride in the steady growth of the competition and reaffirmed the commitment to sustaining literacy-focused initiatives for children in Afikpo and beyond.

The Divisional Commissioner, Mrs. Uche-Nwachi Margaret, praised the impressive turnout, emphasising that the initiative is helping to build literacy, confidence, and verbal excellence among pupils. She explained that the spelling bee aligns with NGGA’s mission to raise intellectually empowered young people capable of excelling in academics and leadership.

Chief pronouncer and chief judge, Gift Adene, commended the competitors for their intellect, courage, and strong spelling skills, noting that the participating schools have continued to raise their performance standards.

This year’s event received sponsorship support from community stakeholders including Dr. Otu Nnachi Chukwuemeka, Mrs. Abba-Njoku Edith (State Commissioner, NGGA), and Chief Unya Effor, General Manager of Unity FM.

Organisers say preparations for the next edition are already underway, with hopes of expanding participation and strengthening the culture of learning within the community.
