Ogun Police Arraign Activist JustDetoun Over Alleged Cyberbullying of Gov. Dapo Abiodun

The Ogun State Police Command has filed a six-count charge against social activist and online commentator Adetoun Onajobi, popularly known as JustDetoun, over alleged cyberbullying and false accusations against Governor Dapo Abiodun.

According to the police, the charges—now before the Federal High Court, Abeokuta Division—arise from statements Onajobi made on her social media platforms following a fatal road accident in December 2025 that claimed the lives of two friends of British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua.

In videos shared online, Onajobi accused the Ogun State Government of lacking a single ambulance across the state and described Governor Abiodun in inflammatory terms, alleging corruption, moral misconduct, and gross negligence in governance. Some of the remarks, the police said, crossed into personal abuse and incitement, including comments directed at the governor’s parentage.

In a statement released on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the prosecution is based on alleged violations of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, noting that:

  • Onajobi allegedly used internet-enabled platforms to publish false accusations against the Ogun State Government.
  • She is accused of cyberbullying and harassment of the sitting governor.
  • The content was said to be malicious, unverified, and damaging to public order.

The police further disclosed that on January 2, 2026, Onajobi was invited for questioning to respond to the allegations. However, she did not honour the invitation.

“Rather than appear,” the statement said, “the suspect, through her lawyer, claimed to be medically indisposed.” A medical report was attached to the response, outlining several health challenges allegedly affecting her and steps taken to stabilize her condition.

The police say the case has now moved to court to allow the judiciary determine whether her actions amount to criminal cyberbullying or fall within permissible limits of free expression.

This development once again puts the spotlight on the fine line between activism and abuse in Nigeria’s increasingly combative digital space—where social media has become both a tool for accountability and, at times, a weapon without restraint.
