Maiduguri Rocked by Coordinated Suicide Bombings: 23 Dead, 108 Injured in Devastating Ramadan Evening Attacks

A wave of terror swept through Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday, March 16, 2026, as multiple suicide bombers struck crowded public locations in a calculated assault that claimed at least 23 lives and left 108 people wounded.

The explosions detonated around 7:24 p.m., shortly after residents had gathered for iftar to break their Ramadan fast, turning moments of communal relief into scenes of chaos and carnage. The targeted sites—El-Kanemi Monday Market (one of the city’s busiest trading hubs), the main gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), and the Post Office Flyover—were packed with civilians, amplifying the scale of devastation.

The Borno State Police Command, in an official statement released by spokesperson ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed that preliminary investigations point to coordinated suicide attacks executed with improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Authorities described the incidents as deliberate acts aimed at inflicting maximum civilian casualties in strategic and densely populated areas.

Eyewitnesses had earlier reported hearing powerful blasts in the vicinity of the Monday Market, UMTH gate, and Post Office, with initial suspicions immediately falling on Boko Haram insurgents or their splinter factions—a fear now substantiated by police findings.

In the immediate aftermath, a joint security response involving Police Tactical Units, Nigerian Army personnel, and other operatives swiftly secured the blast sites. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams conducted thorough sweeps to ensure no secondary devices remained, while cordons were established to preserve evidence and facilitate rescue operations.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Borno State Emergency Management Agency, and medical teams mobilized rapidly to evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals, where overwhelmed medical staff continue to provide critical care to survivors.

Governor Babagana Zulum and security chiefs have condemned the attacks in the strongest terms, vowing that perpetrators will face justice and that efforts to degrade insurgent capabilities will intensify. The incident has reignited deep concern across Nigeria’s northeast, where years of insurgency have already displaced millions and left communities living under constant threat.

As Maiduguri mourns yet another tragic loss during the holy month of Ramadan, this latest atrocity highlights the persistent vulnerability of civilian spaces and the urgent need for enhanced intelligence sharing, improved perimeter security at public venues, and sustained pressure on terrorist networks.

Our deepest condolences go to the families of the deceased, the injured, and every resident of Maiduguri affected by this senseless violence. May the wounded recover swiftly, and may peace finally prevail in the region.
