JUST IN: Court sentences killers of Afenifere leader’s daughter to death

An Ondo State High Court sentenced three people to death for the murder of Mrs. Funke Olakurin, the daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the leader of Afenifere, a pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, charmingpro reports

The convicts Muhammed Shehu, Mazaje Lawal, and Adamu Adamu, who were also accused of killing a hunter in the forest, were found guilty on all counts.

In his verdict, the trial judge, Justice Williams Rotimi Olamide, sentenced them to death by hanging or firing squad on charges of conspiracy to kill, murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery.

On July 12, 2019, Olakurin, 58, was driving from Lagos to Akure, Ondo State, when she was attacked and shot by armed herdsmen on the Benin-Sagamu expressway.

The killers were apprehended on April 6, 2020, by men from the Nigeria Police Force’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad after months of tracking and investigation.

Meanwhile, the judge released the fourth suspect, Auwalu Abubakar, who was charged with aiding and abetting.

Justice Olamide, who expressed condolences to the victim’s family, urged the government to act quickly to address the country’s growing insecurity, which he said had resulted in many paying the ultimate price.
