The Ogun State Government has begged the Federal Government to allocate 20 per cent of all funds it spends on federal roads in Lagos State to fix the state’s deplorable roads.
The government maintained that Ogun has the highest number of federal roads without proper attention from the apex government.
Special Adviser to Governor Abiodun on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, on Wednesday lamented that some of the bad roads in Ogun State belong to the Federal Government.
He urged the Federal Government to come to the aid of the state by intervening on the roads.
Akinmade spoke during a program organized by the Consolidated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abeokuta, titled ‘News File’.
He explained that residents should not put all the blame on the governor as he had already sought the permission of the Federal Government.
“Arguably Ogun State has the largest federal roads in Nigeria, the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta road that everybody is clamoring for is a federal road. And you people are aware of some of efforts that Prince Dapo Abiodun made when he came on board in 2019.
“He and Babajide Sanwo-Olu jointly signed a letter, sent it to the President to please give them the road so they can operate and transfer so our people can ply the road without fear and hindrances but the permission was not granted.
“Even Epe to Ijebu Ode is a federal road, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu interchange to Abeokuta is also federal road. We have so many federal roads here and I want to ask if perhaps the Federal Government could just as assist Ogun State by spending 20 per cent of all it spent on Lagos federal roads in Ogun State, our roads will not be like this.
“So why should we now put all the blame on the government? We are not even blaming the present administration because we know that they inherited this crisis, President Tinubu is just one year in office so we can’t blame him.”
