After Germany announced last year that it would begin returning the bronzes, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Culture Minister Claudia Roth signed the agreement with their Nigerian counterparts in Berlin.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Culture, thanked Germany for “taking the lead in correcting the wrongs of the past,” hailing “the dawn of a new era of cooperation.”

The first two artworks, a king’s head and a plaque depicting three warriors, were presented to Nigerian representatives on Friday, July 1.
