Ernest Koroma, the former President of Sierra Leone, is scheduled to arrive in Nigeria on Thursday.

On Thursday, the former President will seek political shelter in Africa’s largest country.

Following a probe into a botched coup attempt in his country, Koroma was found guilty.

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, announced his arrival in Nigeria in a signed public notice.

It read as follows: “On Wednesday, January 3, 2024, in front of Magistrate Santigie Bangura at Magistrate Court #2, the Republic of Sierra Leone charged Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma for his alleged role in the failed coup of November 26, 2023.”

The notice further stated that Koroma faces treason, misprision of treason, and two counts of harbouring.

However, the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, has granted the ex-President political shelter in Nigeria.

A letter issued to the current President of Sierra Leone, Julius Bio, by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, with the headline “Temporarily Relocation of Former President to Abuja,” requested that the former President be permitted to go to Nigeria.

The letter was signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, and Macky Sall of Sierra Leone on January 2, 2024.
