What is a Vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception. It involves cutting or sealing the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra. This prevents sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation, effectively eliminating the possibility of pregnancy. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and is considered safe, quick, and highly effective, with a success rate of over 99%. Recovery is typically swift, with most men resuming normal activities within a few days.
Despite its effectiveness, a vasectomy does not provide immediate sterility, as residual sperm may still be present for several weeks. Doctors usually recommend follow-up semen analysis to confirm the absence of sperm before relying on the procedure for birth control. While vasectomies are generally considered permanent, reversal procedures exist but are not always successful. The procedure does not affect testosterone levels, sexual function, or ejaculation volume, as the testes continue producing sperm that are naturally absorbed by the body.
