Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied claims that he plans to step down for any contender in the 2027 presidential election
In a statement issued Thursday in Abuja by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku addressed reports stemming from his interview with BBC Hausa Service, saying he was misrepresented by parts of the media.
“After reviewing both the video and transcripts of the interview – in Hausa and English – it is clear that at no point did the former Vice President state, suggest, or imply that he intends to step down for anyone,” the statement read.
“Atiku Abubakar made it clear that young people and other prospective presidential candidates are free to participate in the race. He also emphasized that should a young candidate emerge through a competitive primary, he would fully support that candidate without hesitation,” the statement added.
The press release stressed that while interpretative journalism is valid, misrepresenting statements for sensationalism is unacceptable.
