Armed Forces Day: Gov Fubara releases N130m to veterans

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has commended the Nigerian military for their fierce operations against non-state actors who have continued to cause insecurity in Nigeria.

Speaking on the final day of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara said soldiers have continued to perform their constitutional duties and despite the dangerous circumstances, they are putting their lives on the line for all Nigerians.

Fubara, in a statement by Boniface Onyedi, his senior special adviser, said: “In the end, some returned traumatised with loss of limbs and shattered hopes, while others never returned at all to their families and loved ones.

“We also salute our veterans and members of the Nigerian Legion for their immeasurable services and for the support and solidarity that they have continued to provide to our soldiers and their fellow veterans.”

Fubara noted that, though the war on terror and banditry has not fully ended, it is essential to commend the armed forces for the significant daily gains made on the battlefield.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for his determination to tackle economic and security challenges with a political will that will end the activities of Boko Haram and other internal security threats from non-state actors.

Fubara assured that his administration will continue to support the military “to enable them to discharge their constitutional responsibilities to Rivers State and the country.”

In his address, the chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the Nigerian Legion, Charles T. Hart, expressed appreciation to the governor for his extraordinary support of legionnaires. He thanked him particularly for the release of N100 million pledged by his predecessor on January 15, 2023, and also for redeeming his pledge of N30 million.

Hart also commended the governor for approving the employment of 48 children of fallen heroes into the civil service of Rivers State
