A brief standoff reportedly occurred at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Thursday, February 12, after security operatives allegedly tried to arrest former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai upon his arrival from Cairo.
The claim was made by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, who said El-Rufai refused to go with the operatives without a formal written invitation. Adekeye further alleged that the officers seized El-Rufai’s international passport from one of his aides during the encounter.
In a post on X, Adekeye wrote that security agents “attempted to arrest” El-Rufai at the airport, adding that the former governor insisted on due process before complying with any request.
As of Thursday evening, there has been no official confirmation from security authorities regarding the alleged incident.
The development follows a recent interview El-Rufai granted to BBC Hausa, where he said he could be arrested at any time and accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of pressuring politicians to align with the party or face consequences.
