The fifth edition of the AfroEuropa Gala & Awards Night in London has recognised Mentoring Cmdt Ambassador Alistair Soyode with the AfroEuropa 2026 Star Leadership Award for his contributions to media leadership, global engagement, community development and African advocacy.
The award was presented during the gala held at The City Pavilion in Romford, London, where community leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals, civic representatives and other distinguished guests gathered under the theme, “Fostering a United & Flourishing Community for Future Generations.”
AfroEuropa, established in 2022 by Charming Production Limited, publishers of Charming Magazine, has developed into an annual platform for cultural celebration, community engagement, networking and recognition of contributions to African and European communities.
The fifth edition placed particular emphasis on leadership and service that extend beyond professional boundaries, recognising individuals whose work has involved advocacy, community development, enterprise, mentorship and efforts to connect people and opportunities across societies.
Among the distinguished figures present at the event were the Mayor of Barking & Dagenham, Councillor Manzoor Hussain; the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Rosaline Ogunro; and two-time Mayor of Enfield, Dr Kate Anolue.
The award plaque presented to Soyode described the honour as being “in recognition of your remarkable contributions to Media Leadership, Global Engagement, Community Development and African Advocacy.”
Soyode is the founder and Chairman of BEN Television, a media platform serving Black and ethnic communities in Europe. Through his media and community engagements, he has been involved in initiatives connecting Britain, Africa and the wider African diaspora.
His activities have also extended beyond broadcasting and communications into mentoring, community development and initiatives focused on creating opportunities and strengthening connections between people and institutions.
One such engagement has involved supporting the development of the Nigerian Netball Association and Nigeria’s participation in the African Netball Championships in Kenya, linking diaspora involvement with Nigeria’s sporting development.
Reflecting on the recognition, Soyode expressed gratitude and humility, attributing his ability to serve to his faith and acknowledging the importance of using experience and relationships to create opportunities for others.
“I receive this award with great humility and gratitude. My greatest thanks are to God, who gives us life, strength and the opportunity to serve,” he said.
He described the award as encouragement to continue contributing positively to society.
“I accept this recognition as encouragement to continue doing whatever good we can while we are alive and able. If our experience and relationships can help create opportunities or strengthen communities, then it is worthwhile,” he added.
The AfroEuropa Gala also recognised other individuals for contributions in areas including humanitarian service, education and leadership. Among the recipients was Mrs Titilayo Akintunde, who received the AfroEuropa 2026 Humanitarian Award from Councillor Manzoor Hussain.
The event, convened by Maureen Charming-Layokun, also provided an opportunity for guests to network, celebrate community achievements and strengthen relationships across African and European communities.
For Soyode, the Star Leadership Award adds another recognition to a career and continuing body of work spanning media, diaspora engagement, mentorship, community development and African advocacy.
The fifth AfroEuropa Gala ultimately underscored the organisers’ focus on celebrating service and creating platforms through which individuals and communities can build connections, share opportunities and contribute to future generations.
