Former NFL Player Alphonso Smith Jr. Dies by Suicide at 40 After Cryptic Final Post

Former NFL player and Wake Forest University standout cornerback Alphonso Smith Jr. has died at the age of 40.

According to TMZ Sports, sources with direct knowledge said Smith died by suicide on Wednesday at a housing community in Florida.

Shortly before his death, Smith reportedly shared a disturbing message on Facebook in which he appeared to reflect on his struggles, express regret over hurting people and apologise to those he believed he had disappointed.

“Do not cry for me! I tried everything in my power to fight the demons behind the ones that someone put into ME!” he wrote.

Smith also said he had needed help but did not receive it, while repeatedly apologising for what he described as the pain he had caused others.

“I know I have disappointed so many folks. This is a DEMON in me! But not only me! It’s EVERYONE! I have HURT so many! I needed help and did not get it!” he stated.

In the lengthy post, Smith reportedly described himself as a coward and referenced alleged abuse he said he experienced as a young boy at the hands of an older woman.

He concluded the message with an emotional apology and the words: “I am SORRY! THIS IS IT!”

Smith built a notable college football career at Wake Forest University, where he played from 2004 to 2008. He earned All-American honours during his final season and went on to play professionally in the NFL.

His achievements at Wake Forest were later recognised when he was inducted into the university’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022.

Smith’s death has prompted an outpouring of reactions from those remembering his football career and reflecting on the troubling message he left behind.

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide or self-harm, seek immediate help from local emergency services or a crisis-support service in your country.
