Anambra Infant Tragedy: Police Arrest Parents After Lifeless Twins Found Dumped in Drainage

The Police Command in Anambra State has arrested a couple for allegedly dumping the lifeless bodies of their newborn twin infants inside a drainage channel in the Okpoko area of the state. The suspects were taken into custody early Sunday morning, June 21, 2026, shortly after a tip-off from residents led law enforcement agents to the grim discovery.

According to a police briefing, operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Headquarters responded to an emergency distress call regarding two dead infants abandoned in a gutter along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, in Okpoko. Police teams immediately dispatched to the location, secured the perimeter, and recovered vital forensic evidence before initiating a rapid neighborhood canvas. The swift preliminary investigation successfully traced the digital and physical footprints of the deceased newborns back to their biological parents, who were promptly arrested and transferred to the state command for interrogation.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemned the act, describing it as a horrific violation of human rights and child protection laws. CP Orutugu emphasized that every child deserves protection, care, and an absolute right to life, warning that the command will show no leniency to anyone implicated in child abandonment or infanticide. While the suspects remain in custody assisting detectives, the police have launched a full autopsy and comprehensive investigation to determine whether the twins were abandoned alive to succumb to the elements or were murdered before being discarded in the drainage channel.
