2023: Tinubu picks running mate, to brief Buhari

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, has chosen a Muslim running mate, according to Charmingpro

A highly competent source in Tinubu’s campaign organization, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the former Lagos State Governor would announce the candidate’s name this week.

This comes amid heated debates over presidential candidates’ and running mates’ religious backgrounds.

The two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), both have Muslim presidential candidates. Many stakeholders, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), have insisted on Christian running mates.

While the PDP’s flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, chose Ifeanyi Okowa, a Christian, as his running mate, there are rumors that Tinubu will choose a fellow Muslim as his running mate.

“The vice-presidential nominee will almost certainly be a former governor and senator from Nigeria’s northeast.”

“The person is also a Muslim by accident of birth,” said Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on Saturday, confirming Tinubu’s decision to run on a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“The considerations given for the selection of a running mate were dictated by the need to select an individual capable of working with the presidential candidate to take Nigeria to greater heights,” according to the source.

Tinubu plans to pay Sallah homage to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday in Daura, Katsina, to brief him on his chosen running mate.

He had previously chosen Ibrahim Kabiru Masari as a stand-in for the vice presidency.

In accordance with Section 31 of the Electoral Act, 2022, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) set July 15 as the deadline for presidential and National Assembly candidates to withdraw from the race.
